On December 5, 2024, Silk Sense Hoi An River Resort proudly represented Vietnam at the ASEAN Regional Workshop on “Green Human Resource Management in Tourism.” The event, co-hosted by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Norwegian Confederation of Business (NHO), attracted international delegates, researchers, and leading enterprises.
Green HR Management: An Urgent Need Today
In the face of global challenges posed by climate change, green human resource management (HRM) has emerged as a strategic and vital component across industries, especially in tourism. This sector, deeply reliant on natural resources, the environment, and cultural harmony, requires a sustainable workforce strategy to minimize environmental impacts while enhancing economic and social value.
Green HR refers not only to a skilled workforce but also to employees who are environmentally conscious and responsible. They play a crucial role in implementing sustainable practices such as energy conservation, waste reduction, and water preservation. Investing in green HR not only helps businesses align with international standards but also raises community awareness, driving the tourism industry toward sustainable development.
Across ASEAN, including Vietnam, nations are making significant strides to embrace the global trend of green tourism. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), green jobs will significantly contribute to sustainable employment goals and improve workers’ quality of life. Implementing green HRM is not only a necessary step for environmental protection but also a means for tourism enterprises to maintain long-term competitiveness in the global market.
Green HRM reduces environmental impacts while fostering a high-value workforce, enhancing corporate reputation and trust. It represents a responsibility and an opportunity for the tourism sector to generate lasting value for businesses, communities, and the environment.
The Workshop: Green HR Management and Sustainable Development Solutions
VCCI, in collaboration with NHO—the largest Norwegian employers’ organization and leading business advocacy group—organized the ASEAN Regional Workshop to promote green HRM initiatives, share experiences, and best practices in sustainable tourism development.
Hosted at a 5-star eco-friendly hotel in Hoi An, the workshop aimed to encourage businesses to adopt green HRM models, mitigate environmental impacts, and improve job quality through skill development and social responsibility. This strategy is considered crucial for advancing sustainable tourism in Vietnam and the ASEAN region.
As Vietnam’s representative, Silk Sense not only shared its expertise in green HRM but was also recognized as a leading model in Hoi An. The resort’s General Manager, Ms. Ha Thi Dieu Vien, stated:
“Green HRM is no longer just a trend but a survival factor for businesses in the tourism sector. Sustainable development and business efficiency can go hand in hand, and this shared goal must drive the industry’s efforts.”
Silk Sense proposed actionable solutions, including training local personnel, adopting zero-waste practices, using eco-friendly materials, and integrating cultural activities to create sustainable value for communities.
The workshop concluded with valuable insights and messages that will continue to resonate, driving the tourism sector’s transformation and making sustainable green development a guiding principle for all activities.
