(Tourism Magazine) – On September 9th, in Hoi An City, Quang Nam province, Silk Sense Hoi An River Resort officially announced that it is a resort free of plastic waste and single-use plastics. The program received attention from departments and agencies in Quang Nam; the Vietnam Tourism Association; and central and local press agencies.

According to Mr. Tran Thai Do, the investor of Silk Sense Hoi An River Resort, with a sustainable development orientation, Silk Sense Hoi An River Resort has pursued environmental protection since its inception by using environmentally friendly materials and implementing plastic waste reduction programs. To achieve this plan, the resort has set specific criteria and solutions for each waste problem and applied them synchronously and proactively to ensure the complete elimination of plastic waste within the resort in a short time. This action is not simply about protecting the environment but also opens up great opportunities for sustainable tourism.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam province, said: “This is the first resort to pioneer a zero-plastic waste model and a practical action in concretizing the Green Tourism Criteria. At the same time, this is also a pilot model for tourism businesses in general, as well as resorts and hotels in the area, to orient their tourism products and develop green tourism in line with the province’s development orientation.”
Welcoming and appreciating the efforts of Silk Sense Hoi An River Resort in contributing to the goal of plastic-free tourism in Vietnam, Mr. Vu The Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association, emphasized: The announcement ceremony of the resort’s “Plastic-Free Hotel” is a concrete action by the business, with great significance in creating a ripple effect for the tourism business community not only in Hoi An but throughout the country regarding the determination to implement sustainable tourism development in Vietnam.
Based on the “Plastic-Free Hotel” criteria set developed and successfully implemented by the resort, the Vietnam Tourism Association will research, refine, and immediately issue it for application in evaluating member hotels of the Vietnam Tourism Association, and then lobby competent state agencies to officially issue it for application throughout the entire tourism industry.

Introducing the sustainable development journey and the Plastic-Free Hotel Criteria being applied at Silk Sense Hoi An River Resort, Ms. Ha Thi Dieu Vien – Project Manager of Silk Sense Resort Sustainable Development – said: “One of the major challenges in implementing a plastic-free hotel is finding and deploying suitable alternatives to plastic and single-use plastic products.
This requires us to conduct thorough research and find partners who supply environmentally friendly products. The next challenge is changing the consumption habits of customers and staff in the hotel. To succeed in reducing plastic waste, it is necessary to create awareness and promote change in how people use and consume products.
This may require a long process of spreading positive benefits and creating habit changes among both customers and staff. We had to find reliable suppliers who are committed to the plastic-free criteria.” At the same time, it is necessary to build trust and consensus from customers so that they are willing to participate and provide support.
“A clear statement, a reasonable alternative, a transparent policy… will be an effective bridge between customers, partners and plastic-free hotels,” Ms. Vien affirmed.
