Speaking at the event, Mr. Vu The Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association emphasized that the announcement ceremony of “Zero plastic waste” is a specific action of the business, with great significance for creating spreading to the tourism business community not only in Hoi An but throughout the country about the determination to implement sustainable tourism development in Vietnam.
Mr. Binh added that, with sponsorship from the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP/GEF-SGP), the Vietnam Tourism Association is currently actively implementing the project “Reducing plastic waste”. in the field of Vietnamese tourism”, implementation period is two years (2023-2024).
Also according to Mr. Binh, the project “Reducing plastic waste in Vietnam’s tourism sector” will focus on activities to raise awareness of all levels, industries, businesses, people, and tourists about the impacts of plastic waste in Vietnam. harmful effects of plastic waste and a sense of responsibility in reducing plastic waste. At the same time, the project piloted solutions and initiatives to reduce plastic waste at a number of hotels, restaurants, travel businesses, and tourist attractions in the two provinces of Ninh Binh and Quang Nam.
An important content of this project that will be implemented is the development and pilot application of a set of criteria for recognizing plastic-free tourism businesses, contributing to replicating management practices to reduce plastic waste. of business.
The Vietnam Tourism Association (VITA) hopes that through the project’s activities, it can send a strong message, calling for the efforts and joint contributions of people, businesses, communities and tourists. for the goal of plastic-free tourism in Vietnam.
The Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association said that although Hoi An has been implementing initiatives and campaigns to protect the environment from a very early age. However, through the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental protection efforts have been affected because society has devoted resources to epidemic prevention.
Accordingly, VITA hopes that the implementation of the project to reduce plastic waste in the tourism sector will contribute to continuing to support efforts to protect the environment and help Hoi An maintain its position as a leading destination in implementing environmental protection measures in Vietnam.
“Based on the set of criteria for zero plastic waste Resort” successfully developed and implemented by the resort, VITA will immediately research, complete and issue them immediately to apply the assessment to hotels that are VITA members, moving forward to lobby competent State agencies to officially promulgate it for application throughout the tourism industry,” Mr. Binh added.
